Tom Stewart

I am a muralist and public artist who designs and paints large-scale, photorealistic murals for public venues.  I've been painting for over two decades; my work appears in Denali National Park in Alaska, the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC, the Grout War Museum in Waterloo, Iowa, Tettegouche State Park in Finland, Minnesota, and in several other state and public spaces.

I grew up in Minneapolis and hold a BS in Forestry and a BFA in painting.  My art career started in Alaska where I produced a series of paintings depicting the domestication of the Alaskan landscape. Awarded by the Alaska Percent for Art program, I painted numerous Alaska flora and fauna murals that are in schools, libraries, and a state ferry vessel, the MV Kennicott.  In Minnesota, I painted several mural commissions for various studios in the Twin Cities followed by exclusively painting for Split Rock Studios in Arden Hills, MN. The murals I painted for Split Rock appear in numerous state and national interpretive centers as well as science and history museums. Since 2015 I have been painting murals for public and private commissions as an independent contractor. I also continue to be commissioned by Split Rock studios to design and paint murals.

I create smaller works for exhibits, gallery sales, and private commissions. I am enjoying painting “plein air” in all of our four seasons. More recently, I painted a wonderful view of the Town and Country Club in St.Paul, MN, an 1850’s home in Franconia, MN, my favorite mysterious tree along White Bear Lake, MN, and an outdoor wedding in St. Paul, MN.

My work is often seen at the Minnesota State Fair fine art competition. In 2022 my painting titled “ Minnesota State Symbols-Why Not Craft Beer?” won third place in the painting category.
